AIOZ Stream vs Livepeer vs Theta: What's Actually Different

AIOZ Stream: peer-to-peer streaming replaces the CDN bill

Livepeer, Theta Network, and AIOZ Stream get compared to each other constantly in forum threads and comment sections, usually without a clear answer. That is partly because none of the three actually compete on the same layer. Theta is a hybrid cloud-edge network built around AI, video, and rendering compute. Livepeer is an open network for video transcoding that is now pushing hard into real-time AI video. AIOZ Stream runs on a network that also handles storage and delivery, not just compute. Here is what each one actually does, in its own words, and where the real differences are.

TL;DR:

  • Theta and Livepeer are both compute-focused networks (edge compute and transcoding) with no native storage layer of their own.
  • AIOZ Stream runs on a network that combines storage, compute, and delivery, so there is no separate storage vendor to wire in.

Theta Network: hybrid cloud-edge for AI, video, and rendering

Theta's own materials describe Theta EdgeCloud as a hybrid cloud-edge computing platform for AI inference, video transcoding, and 3D rendering, built on a network of edge nodes that earn TFUEL for relaying video and contributing GPU cycles. Theta has published enterprise case studies naming real customers, most notably Trusted Media Brands running FailArmy and Pet Collective on EdgeCloud Video across Roku, Fire TV, Samsung, and Apple TV. Theta also lists Google, Samsung, Sony, Deutsche Telekom, Binance, and NTT Digital as enterprise validators, which is a genuinely large roster compared to most DePIN projects.

What Theta does not offer is a native storage layer. Its own documentation and blog focus on compute (video encoding, AI inference, rendering) delivered at the edge, not on persisting files. A team building a full video product on Theta still needs a separate place to store source files and renditions.

Livepeer: an open network for transcoding and real-time AI video

Livepeer's positioning has shifted in its own public roadmap. It started as, and still is, an open network for video transcoding, with published cost-savings case studies: Livepeer Studio's own blog cites SankoTV saving 80% on video costs by moving off AWS's Interactive Video Service, and Fishtank saving roughly 50% by moving off Cloudflare. Livepeer does not publish a flat per-minute rate card to compare directly against AWS or Google Cloud's own transcoding pricing, so treat the case-study percentages as what a specific customer reported, not a guaranteed rate. More recently, Livepeer's "Cascade" network vision has repositioned the project around real-time AI video (ComfyStream, AI Gateway API for batch inference) rather than transcoding alone.

Like Theta, Livepeer has no native storage. Its own tutorials walk developers through pairing Livepeer with Arweave, Filecoin (via FVM), or IPFS specifically because storage is not part of what Livepeer's network does. That is a reasonable design choice, but it means storage is always a second integration, not something the network already handles.

AIOZ Stream: storage, compute, and streaming on one network

AIOZ Stream is built on AIOZ's combined network, which is why storage, compute, and delivery share one account and one wallet balance instead of requiring a separate storage vendor the way Theta and Livepeer both do. That structural difference also shows up in how pricing is published: AIOZ Stream's documented rates are storage at $0.02 per GB per month, delivery at $0.02 per GB, and transcoding at $0.01 per minute up to HD, $0.02 per minute at 2K, and $0.05 per minute at 4K, all billed from one AIOZ token balance. Whether that ends up cheaper than a specific Theta or Livepeer setup depends entirely on your actual usage mix and isn't something this article is going to flatten into one number, but the rates themselves are published and stable, which is worth something on its own.

Which one actually fits your use case

If your product is already built around real-time AI video effects or large-scale AI inference at the edge, Theta and Livepeer both have a longer track record there than AIOZ Stream does today, and Theta's enterprise validator list is a real signal of scale. If you specifically want video transcoding with well-documented cost savings versus AWS or Google Cloud and you are comfortable wiring in a separate storage network, Livepeer's case studies are worth reading closely. If what you actually want is to skip the second storage contract entirely, that gap is specific to AIOZ Stream. Neither Theta nor Livepeer closes it, because neither one stores files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Theta and Livepeer compete directly with each other?
Partially. Both do video transcoding, but Theta frames itself more broadly around AI and rendering compute at the edge, while Livepeer has repositioned specifically around real-time AI video through its Cascade roadmap.

Does AIOZ Stream do AI video compute like Theta and Livepeer?
AIOZ Stream's current focus is the streaming pipeline itself (ingest, transcode, store, deliver). Real-time AI video effects are an active area for Theta (EdgeCloud) and Livepeer (ComfyStream) specifically, and is not the comparison this article is making a claim about for AIOZ.

Can I use Theta or Livepeer together with a storage network like Filecoin or Arweave?
Yes, and both projects publish tutorials for exactly that, since neither one stores files natively. That is the integration AIOZ Stream's combined network is designed to remove.

Is AIOZ Stream's pricing actually cheaper than Theta or Livepeer?
Neither Theta nor Livepeer publishes a flat rate card to compare against directly; Livepeer's savings claims come from named customer case studies, not a published price list. AIOZ Stream's storage, delivery, and transcoding rates are published and fixed; check them against your own expected usage rather than a single averaged claim.

Does Theta's enterprise validator list mean it's more established than AIOZ or Livepeer?
It is a genuine signal of enterprise reach; Google, Samsung, Sony, Deutsche Telekom, Binance, and NTT Digital are real, named validators. It says more about Theta's enterprise partnerships specifically than about which network fits a given video product best.
